Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Anglo-Indian furniture originated during the British colonial period in India, combining traditional European forms with elaborate Indian hand-carving techniques. Common motifs include native flora, fauna such as elephants and lions, and intricate scrollwork executed on dense indigenous timbers.

These pieces are typically crafted from dense tropical hardwoods such as teak, rosewood, or padauk, known for durability and rich grain. Seats and backrests often feature leather or cane upholstery secured with decorative brass studding or tacking.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-carved relief details depicting regional motifs like elephants, floral vines, or animal terminals. Look for construction hallmarks including hand-cut joinery, dense exotic timbers, and natural patination on both wood and upholstery elements.

These statement chairs function as accent seating in modern living spaces, libraries, or entryways, introducing texture and historical context. Pair them with neutral upholstery and contemporary minimalist decor to balance the visual weight of the dark, detailed wood carving.

Clean carved timber using a soft brush to remove dust from recesses, followed by periodic applications of clear beeswax polish. Leather components require gentle conditioning with a specialised leather balm to maintain flexibility and prevent cracking over time.
