Mid 19th Century Anglo Indian Carved Padouk Open Armchair with English Regency Influences

19th century
Description

A mid 19th century (circa 1850) Anglo Indian carved padouk open armchair, probably from the Bombay region, with strong influences of English Regency furniture designs.

This highly decorative armchair consists of a shaped top rail with foliate and stylised scroll carved decoration, the shaped back with central cane panel.

This leads down to the scroll arms with foliate carving to the arm supports with a cane seat, the front and side seat rails with floral and foliate carved decoration with small shaped lower brackets.

The armchair is supported by cabriole legs to the front with acanthus carved decoration with unusual scroll design to the back terminating with carved paw feet and outswept legs to the back.

The chair can be used as it is or seat pads or cushions can be added for more comfort, the seat pads shown are for photographic purposes only and are not included with the chair.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Anglo-Indian Regency furniture refers to 19th-century pieces produced in British India by local artisans, adapting classical English Regency forms using native hardwoods and traditional carving techniques.

These chairs were primarily constructed from dense indigenous hardwoods such as padouk, rosewood, or teak, frequently featuring hand-woven cane panels designed for air circulation in tropical climates.

Authentic colonial pieces exhibit detailed hand-carved flora or foliage motifs, original woven cane panels, and robust mortise-and-tenon construction using heavy exotic timbers.

Positioning an ornate carved armchair alongside tailored modern upholstery creates contrast, pairing effectively with minimalist side tables and neutral natural-fibre floor coverings.

Apply clear beeswax polish periodically to maintain the timber frame, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to stop the cane weave from drying out or splitting.
