French Napoleon III Ebonised & Gilt Bronze Writing Desk Bonheur-du-jour 1880

19th century
Description

Stunning ebonized Napoleon III writing desk or bonheur du jour

Circa 1880

Very on trend with lacquered finish and gilt accents

A superb 19th-century French Napoleon III writing desk, richly decorated in ebonised wood with gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts and intricate trellis-pattern inlay

This elegant bonheur-du-jour form features a raised superstructure with two small drawers flanking a central compartment, all surmounted by a pierced gilt gallery

The desk front is beautifully arranged with shaped panels of lattice inlay framed in ormolu, each centred with finely cast gilt bronze mounts including mascarons, ribboned cartouches, and rosettes The writing surface retains its original tooled leather inset, now wonderfully aged to a warm patinated tone

Bought from a dealer on Marche de Biron at Paris antiques markets

Raised on four turned and fluted legs with gilt accents, the whole piece shows the stylistic refinement typical of Second Empire France: symmetrical, luxurious, and heavily influenced by Louis XVI neoclassicism interpreted through a mid-19th-century lens

Offered in great shape ready for home use right away

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bonheur-du-jour is a specialized form of ladies writing desk created in eighteenth-century France and popularized throughout the Second Empire Napoleon III era. It is characterized by a flat writing table base topped with a raised rear superstructure containing small drawers, cabinets, or shelves.

Furniture from the Napoleon III period frequently utilizes ebonised hardwoods, fruitwoods, brass, mother-of-pearl, and tortoiseshell marquetry. Decorative accents usually feature gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, cast brass galleries, and gold-tooled leather writing surfaces.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, heavy cast gilt bronze hardware attached with historical thread screws, and period-correct wear on structural feet and writing surfaces. Ebonised finishes from this era show subtle surface craquelure under close inspection.

An ebonised bonheur-du-jour serves as a focal contrast piece against contemporary neutral plaster or dark painted walls. Styling it with minimal modern accessories, modern framed artwork above, or setting it in a dressing room creates a refined balance between historical and contemporary aesthetics.

Maintain the ebonised finish by dusting regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and applying a neutral microcrystalline wax sparingly once a year. Avoid chemical metal polishes on gilt bronze mounts, as abrasive cleaners remove the original gold plating and damage surrounding wood finishes.
