Large Dutch Antique Pine Linen Press

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Pinefinders
Description

Here’s a very large Dutch antique pine linen press, full of presence and character.

The top section has two large doors, while the base contains three full-width drawers with old porcelain knobs (these can be changed if you’d prefer alternatives). The top has a slightly Gothic influence, with carved detail and reeding down the sides. It stands on square feet and features decorative detailing through the centre and across the panels.

Originally painted, it has since been stripped, so it is currently in bare wood. It’s in very nice condition for its age (circa 1900).

Inside, you’ll find one half-depth shelf, one full-depth shelf, and three small internal drawers. The shelves are fixed with pins, but the interior can be reconfigured. If you’d prefer a full-depth shelf at the top, or to convert the space for hanging, I can remove the shelves and fit a rail. With an internal depth of 18", it offers good hanging capacity. The original small door catch still works, though a more secure replacement can be fitted if desired.

The top separates from the base for delivery, so you’ll need to allow access for the two main sections. If you’re concerned about manoeuvring the larger section, I can provide exact measurements.

Price: £1,450 as it is, or £1,595 waxed.

Dimensions: height 87½", width 63" (widest point), depth 24" (deepest point), internal depth 18"

(approximately 222 cm x 160 cm x 61 cm, internal depth 46 cm).

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A linen press is a traditional two-part storage cabinet designed primarily for folded linens, clothing, and household textiles. Originating in the 17th century, these pieces typically feature a large upper cupboard set above a lower chest of drawers.

Traditional Dutch linen presses were crafted from solid softwoods, predominantly pine or fir, using hand-dovetailed drawer joints and pegged mortise and tenon joinery. The upper section incorporates internal shelves or slides, while the exterior often features moulded cornices and carved pilasters.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-planed timber backboards, hand-cut dovetail joints, and historic wear around keyholes and handles. The construction split into two distinct upper and lower sections to facilitate movement through narrow doorways.

A pine linen press functions as a central storage unit in bedrooms, dining areas, or wide hallways for organizing clothing or tableware. Contrast the warm timber tone with neutral wall surfaces and simple textured fabrics to emphasize its architectural structure.

Dust the wood surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber grain. Keep the cabinet positioned away from direct heat sources and damp conditions to prevent timber warping.
