Description

A fine pair of gilt bronze French Empire candlesticks of classical design. The circular plinth with leaf and berry decoration, supporting a tapering reeded column with three footed base and surmounted with three classical female caryatids, their hair plaited and interspersed with grapes, a single sconce and bobeche above. Retaining most of the original gilding. (See H. Ottomeyer et P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen I, Munich, 1986, p. 326, fig. 5.1.6 et 5.1.7 for a similar design). Wear consistent with age.

French Empire style candlesticks emerged in the early nineteenth century during the reign of Napoleon I, drawing heavy inspiration from ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian classical motifs.
