Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire style candlesticks emerged in the early nineteenth century during the reign of Napoleon I, drawing heavy inspiration from ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian classical motifs. Key stylistic elements include fluted shafts, classical busts, palm leaves, and animal paw or human feet detailing.

These items were primarily cast in bronze using the lost-wax or sand casting method and subsequently finished with mercury gilding, known as ormolu. This process created a durable gold layer bonded to the metal surface, which was often chased by hand to define detailed decorative patterns.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit heavy weight, sharp hand-chased detailing, and threaded internal rod construction held together with square or early irregular hand-cut nuts. Subtle wear on elevated areas revealing the underlying bronze is common, contrasting with uniform modern electroplated gold finishes.

Positioning a pair symmetrically on a dining table, mantelpiece, or console table establishes visual structure and balance. They contrast effectively against dark wood furniture, modern minimalist backdrops, or marble surfaces.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth to remove loose particles. Avoid abrasive chemical polishes, solvent cleaners, or water, as these can strip or degrade the delicate gilded surface.
