Circular Oriental Hardwood Coffee Table

19th century
Description

An Exceptional Quality Mid 19th Century Oriental Hardwood Circular Coffee Table, Of Unusual Form, Having Superbly Figured Top With Decorative Figuring, Over Attractive Well Carved Frieze, Raised On Short Legs With Ball And Claw Feet United By Cross Stretcher.

Whilst this fabulous circular coffee table bears many similarities to the ever popular and relatively regularly found opium type tables, this table certainly feels like its a big step up from one of those, in terms of its overall quality, attractive design, choice of timbers and carved decoration. Also of course it is extremely sturdy and was made as a coffee table originally.

Many items were produced in China for the western market from early in the 19th century and beyond. These items are commonly referred to now as having been made for the Chinese Export market.

Of course its very difficult to find such a thing as we regard a coffee table now in antique form as they simply didn’t make, or use low coffee tables in europe in antique times.

The table is constructed from rich, dense oriental hardwood which is particularly hard wearing, meaning the table is perfectly suitable for warm mugs, spilt drinks and other similar events which occur in day to day life.

As with all items we offer for sale it has been inspected by our highly skilled, specialist, traditional antique furniture restorers before being made available for sale, to ensure that it is in absolutely tip top condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Traditional East Asian low tables are characterized by low profiles, dense hardwood construction, and floating frame-and-panel top construction designed to accommodate environmental expansion and contraction. They frequently incorporate detailed relief carving along the apron, depict natural or mythological motifs, and feature cabriole or scroll-form legs.

These pieces are predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, hongmu, zitan, or teak. Joinery relies on traditional wooden mortise and tenon joints without the use of metal nails or screws, often finished with natural wax or lacquer.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved details with minor human variations, joinery that uses precise wooden pegging, and floating center panels on the top surface. The wood exhibits distinct weight, grain density, and natural patination around areas of frequent contact and handling.

A dark carved tea table serves as a tactile focal point in contemporary or minimalist living spaces. Pairing it with neutral-toned upholstered seating, clean-lined sofas, and simple ceramic accessories balances the intricate woodwork.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste occasionally to protect the timber finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources, radiators, and prolonged exposure to sunlight to prevent the hardwood from drying or cracking.
