Description

A finely enamelled Meiji period Satsuma bowl by the recorded workshop Nikko, signed beneath the underglaze-blue Shimazu clan crest with a red and gilt “Nikko” cartouche. The classic ivory crackled body is decorated externally with trailing chrysanthemums and seasonal flowers in pastel enamels with finely controlled gilding. Inside, a large flowering shrub rises from a rocky base, executed with carefully layered colours and miniature precision.

A bold black-and-gold brocade border frames the rim and provides a strong graphic line, characteristic of higher-quality Kyoto-school work. The painting quality, palette and signature align closely with documented Nikko pieces, including a tea service with identical mark sold at Bonhams, London (15 May 2014).

Satsuma pottery is a type of Japanese earthenware ceramic that originated in Satsuma province during the sixteenth century. By the late Meiji period, artisans produced detailed pieces featuring overglaze enamel paintings and gilded accents for export to Western markets.

Satsuma ware is crafted from a light earthenware clay body covered in a pale, crackled ivory glaze. The exterior decorations are created using overglaze polychrome enamels combined with gold leaf outlining.

Authentic Satsuma pieces feature a characteristic micro-crackle glaze beneath hand-painted enamels. Many late nineteenth-century items bear maker marks, painter signatures, or the Shimazu family crest, depicted as a cross inside a circle.
