Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian writing tables were produced in Britain during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901) and were designed specifically for correspondence. Typically constructed from solid hardwoods like oak or mahogany, they often feature inset leather surfaces, shallow drawers for stationery, turned legs, and brass castors for flexibility in placement.

These pieces were primarily built from solid woods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut, often paired with gilded or plain leather writing inserts known as skivers. Standard hardware included cast brass castors and hand-turned wooden or brass drawer knobs, with internal drawer linings made of pine or oak.

Authentic Victorian desks typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints on frieze drawers, original brass castors fitted to turned legs, and subtle unevenness indicative of hand-planed timber. Keyholes with original brass escutcheons and age-appropriate wear to the underside of the frame also help verify period construction.

A Victorian writing table can serve as an elegant modern home office station, a hallway console table, or a focal piece in a living room bay window. Combining the dark timber patina with contemporary lighting, minimal stationery accessories, or a modern task chair creates a balanced contrast between period character and current design.

To preserve the timber and leather insert, place the desk away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or warping. Treat the wood with a natural beeswax polish twice yearly and maintain the leather surface with a specialized leather conditioner to prevent cracking.
