Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sheraton period armchairs, originating in late 18th-century Britain, are characterised by straight lines, refined neoclassical carving, and balanced proportions. They frequently feature fluted legs, painted frames, and light structural designs influenced by classical antiquity and contemporary French styles.

These armchairs were typically constructed using native hardwoods such as beech or fruitwood when intended for painting, as these woods provided a smooth base for gesso and paint application. Upholstery involved natural materials including horsehair stuffing, linen webbing, and woven fabric secured with brass studs.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of genuine age, such as hand-cut joinery, irregular frame dimensions, and layered paint finishes showing natural wear. Original upholstery tack marks, hand-carved details with minor imperfections, and timber shrinkage across the grain also indicate period origin.

A painted Georgian armchair serves as a focal accent piece when placed alongside neutral minimalist sofas or positioned beside a writing desk. Combining vibrant fabric tones with modern architectural elements balances historical texture with contemporary decor schemes.

Painted frames should be kept away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent paint flaking and wood movement. Cleaning requires gentle dry dusting with a soft microfibre cloth, while upholstery should be vacuumed delicately using a soft brush attachment.
