FAQs

Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export wares produced in the Arita region and exported from the port of Imari. Developed in the 17th century, it is characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, gold, and vibrant enamels.

These chargers are crafted from fine kaolin clay porcelain, fired at high temperatures. The process involves applying underglaze cobalt blue prior to initial firing, followed by hand-painted overglaze enamels in terracotta shades and gold leaf gilding in subsequent firings.

Authentic pieces typically display hand-painted variations, subtle irregularities in the cobalt blue underglaze, and characteristic spur marks on the underside from kiln firing. Later reproduction pieces often feature uniform transfer-printed outlines and lighter ceramic weight.

Imari chargers can be displayed on timber sideboards using plate stands or mounted in symmetrical wall arrangements to create focal points. The cobalt blue and terracotta palette complements both neutral minimalist interiors and traditional dark wood furniture schemes.

Clean delicate porcelain using a soft microfibre cloth and lukewarm water with mild soap, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners or submersion. Display the pieces out of direct sunlight to preserve the overglaze enamel work and gilt detailing.
