Description

A jewel-like late Meiji Satsuma bowl by Hododa (???), Yokohama, signed beneath the Shimazu crest, c. 1895–1910. The celebrated “Thousand Butterflies” design blankets both exterior and interior with a micro-mosaic of butterflies in exquisitely controlled polychrome enamels and sumptuous raised gilt. Inside, banners and autumn maple leaves (momiji) float across an ivory crackled ground, anchored by a central roundel motif.

The brushwork is exceptionally steady and fine — each wing veined and gilded with minute precision. The gold is bright and even, the enamel palette fresh, marking this as a superior example of Yokohama export porcelain.
