18th Century Mahogany Bowfront Dressing Table Mirror

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Late 18th Century, George III Period, Mahogany Dressing Table Mirror, Having Old Shield Shaped Swing Plate, Over Elegant And Well Figured Bowfront Base, With Three Drawers To Frieze, Raised On Original Splay Bracket Feet.

Often referred to as “toilet mirrors”, dressing table mirrors were made from the beginning of the 18th Century onwards.

Designed to sit atop a dressing table, or chest of drawers, in the bedroom or dressing room they are found in a huge variety of sizes, woods, shapes, sizes and qualities.

This is a nice example, George III and constructed from attractive well figured mahogany timbers which retain a good colour and surface. It is also bowfronted in shape which adds great elegance and the shield design mirror plate is always a popular feature as it adds something a little different when compared to the more common plain oval shape.

Although originally designed to sit on top of a dressing table it is of course most versatile and would suit a whole variety of locations around the home.

The mirror plate is almost certainly original and remains in good condition with just a few areas of pitting, or silvering, as one would expect. These areas have been highlighted in the attached images and of course should one wish to change the mirror plate for a new more perfect one this can be carried out relatively inexpensively. The current old plate is very much still fit for purpose however. Overall the item is in very good condition and has received a natural wax polish by our restorers before being offered for sale.

Circa 1790.

Height – 23in.

Width – 17in.

Depth – 8.5in.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A toilet mirror, or dressing mirror, is a small adjustable tabletop mirror designed during the 18th century to sit atop a chest of drawers or dressing table to assist with grooming routines.

Georgian toilet mirrors were predominantly constructed using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, often featuring boxwood stringing, brass swivel fittings, and mercury glass plates.

Authentic 18th-century pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the base drawers, hand-poured glass with slight surface distortions, and original brass turn-screws.

Position the mirror on a hallway sideboard, chest of drawers, or bedroom vanity unit to create a traditional focal point while providing functional depth.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain, avoiding liquid glass cleaners on the timber components.
