H.w. Bedford, 67 Regent Street, London – Massive Silver-cased Pocket Watch (Circa 1910)

1900 - 1920
Description

H.W. Bedford, 67 Regent Street, London – Massive Silver-Cased Pocket Watch (circa 1910)

For sale: a fine and rare large Goliath solid silver pocket watch, retailed by H.W. Bedford of Regent Street, London, and fitted with a gilt metal movement signed Atlas.

This exceptional timepiece features a fully signed, rare black-and-white enamel dial in its original, unrestored condition. The substantial Goliath (70mm) case is crafted from 0.935 solid silver, a higher-grade silver than the standard 0.800 or 0.925 sterling. Made in Switzerland circa 1910, the watch remains in excellent overall condition.

The striking black enamel dial showcases bold white Roman numerals with outer minute divisions, complemented by white painted hands and protected by a highly beveled glass crystal—all in excellent condition.

The pin-set, keyless-wind movement features blued screws and is signed:

“The Atlas Watch, Manufactured in Switzerland.”

Recently serviced, the movement runs very well. The high-grade silver case has a smooth polished finish, with both the inner cover and cuvette stamped with silver hallmarks (0.935) and numbered 629829.

Specifications:

• Case diameter: 70mm (excluding stem and crown)

• Thickness: approx. 2.5cm

• Movement: Gilt metal, signed Atlas

• Silver purity: 0.935

• Condition: Excellent, serviced, and in full working order

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Goliath pocket watches are oversized mechanical timepieces popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often housed in protective travelling cases to serve as portable desk clocks.

Edwardian pocket watches were predominantly constructed with silver, gold, or nickel-silver cases, glass crystal covers, painted enamel dials, and internal mechanical movements made of steel and brass components.

Authentic pieces feature hallmarked or stamped metal casings, hand-engraved maker names or retailer details on the dial, and era-appropriate mechanical lever escapement movements.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed on a dedicated brass watch stand, showcased within a glass cloche, or set on a desk tray alongside leather and metal accessories.

Store the item in a dry environment to prevent moisture damage, avoid over-winding the movement, and gently buff the silver exterior with a soft cloth to manage oxidisation while preserving the aged patina.
