Antique Victorian Mahogany Tilt Top Oval Carved Breakfast Dining Table Restored

19th century
Description

Victorian Mahogany Tilt-Top Table.

A fully restored and beautifully carved tilt top oval table.

We bring to you this fine example of a timeless early Victorian solid Mahogany tilt top oval table believed to be made between C1850. This lovely table has been fully restored in our workshop so is in a gleaming condition having been traditionally French Polished throughout. The table has an idyllic warm colour and sympathetically still retains much of its patina, charm and character.

This tilt top table is made from all solid Mahogany featuring a particularly lovely base incorporating a large turned pillar which goes to its 4 beautifully shaped and carved scroll ended legs which stand on its original castors on white porcelain wheels typical of the early Victorian age. This table has a small overall form yet is versatile from having an oval-shaped top managing to comfortably seat 4 people and be used as a dining room or breakfast table. Already not taking up too much room because of this oval shape, the top tilts up-right for storage and is removable via 2 wing bolts with polished brass heads. Unusually and as a sign of quality this tilt top table has no movement or play in the mechanism as the table is being normally used, the top is flat and its high quality brass snap latch operates with little effort and a satisfying click.

This table is in fantastic restored condition as shown by the photographs, however being an antique item of this age there may still be some aesthetic blemishes and scuffs here and there which we feel adds to its originality and heritage.

We have sympathetically restored this item maintaining some of its original patina and have preserved it for many years to come, the table is in home ready condition and is ready to be pride of place in any home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular throughout the nineteenth century, a tilt-top breakfast table features a top mounted on a hinged catch that swivels vertically. This functional design permitted the table to be moved to the perimeter of a room when not required for dining, maximising available floor space.

Dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and rosewood were predominantly used. Construction typically features solid wood pedestal bases, veneered or solid flame mahogany tops, brass tilt latches, and ceramic or brass castors.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-cut dovetails beneath the top block, heavy cast-brass snap latches, ceramic or brass castors on carved legs, and natural wood contraction marks or patina consistent with nineteenth-century cabinetmaking.

A polished mahogany table creates visual contrast against contemporary muted wall paint or modern upholstered seating. Placing minimalist ceramic tableware or geometric centrepieces on the surface bridges traditional woodwork with modern design.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the wood grain. Avoid direct sunlight, heat sources, and liquid contact to preserve the timber and shellac finish.
