Georgian Mahogany Linen Press

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality 18th Century George III Period

Mahogany Linen Press With Dentil Cornice And

Superbly Figured Pair Of Oval Panelled Doors With

Satinwood Crossbanded Decoration Enclosing Hanging

Rail Over Two Short & Two Long Drawers With Original

Brass Handles Raised On Original Shaped Bracket Feet

(Linen presses became particularly popular throughout the

18th century onwards, for as the name suggests, storage of the

household linen. They normally come with fitted sliding trays in

the interior of the top section designed to allow easy access to the

folded linen, however these have often now been removed &

replaced with a hanging rail to allow storage of clothes on hangers

which is more in keeping with modern day living. This particular

linen press is a great size, constructed from superb quality, rich

and well figured mahogany and boasts elegant oval panels to

its doors. It retains its original brass handles and its original

bracket feet. What more could one ask of a truly functional piece

of furniture?)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian linen press is a traditional two-part storage cabinet developed in the 18th century, typically featuring an upper cupboard with sliding trays or shelves for storing household linens and a lower chest fitted with drawers.

These cabinets were predominantly constructed using solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers, with secondary timbers such as pine or oak for internal drawer linings and cast brass for handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces generally display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed back panels, original brass hardware, and natural oxidisation on the unpainted timber bases and drawer interiors.

A mahogany linen press works well as a central anchor piece in a bedroom, hallway, or dining space, offering practical concealed storage while adding historic character to contemporary decorative schemes.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring the cabinet is kept away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
