Antique English Georgian Flame Mahogany Linen Press Chest Wardrobe Armoire Cupboard (Circa 1780)

18th century
Description

This is a fine quality antique English Georgian linen press, constructed from top quality flame mahogany and decorated with boxwood inlay, circa 1780, in excellent condition.  The top section supports a detachable protruding boxwood cross-banded and inlaid dentil architectural cornice, with a central reeded inlaid panel, flanked by a beautiful moulded swan-neck pediment, incorporating decorative boxwood cross-banding and fan motifs.  Below are two exquisite flame mahogany doors, decorated with fine mahogany cross-banding and mouldings, incorporating further boxwood string inlay.  The doors are also decorated with fan-shaped boxwood motifs.  The left-hand door retains its original brass locking mechanism.  The right-hand door features the original working lever lock (with working key).   The two doors open up to reveal a storage area, fitted with five large removable oak linen trays.  The linen trays are constructed with fine hand-dovetailed joints.

The Georgian linen press sits on a base of two-over-three graduated drawers which are constructed with hand-dovetail joints; comprising solid oak drawer linings and bottoms.  The drawer fronts are decorated with boxwood cross-banded frames, string inlay and quadrant fan motifs; fitted with top-quality period solid brass knobs.  The drawers retain the original key escutcheons, with working brass lever locks (including key).  The mahogany laundry chest is raised on its original bracket feet and retains its original pine back-boards.  It dismantles into two sections (top and base) allowing easy access up the staircase into the bedroom.

Condition Report:

This is a fine quality antique English Georgian linen press, constructed from top quality flame mahogany and decorated with boxwood inlay, circa 1780, in excellent condition. There has been an old repair to the right-hand scroll pediment (the scroll pediment is solid in joint). Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the front and sides (see photos), but nothing significant considering its age. The Georgian linen press has been cleaned and French polished by hand in our workshop; therefore, the colour and patination are of an excellent standard. All cross-banding and boxwood inlay is intact and in excellent condition. Both doors close and lock. There are no splits to the flame mahogany doors (which is common in linen presses). The doors lock using the original brass working lever lock (with working key). The drawer fronts incorporate top-quality later brass drawer knobs, with original brass lever locks (with working key). Nominal old use marks to the drawer bottoms. The Georgian linen press retains its original bracket feet and pine backboards. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian linen press is a two-part wooden cabinet originating in the 18th century, designed primarily to store household linens and clothing. The upper section typically features double doors enclosing sliding trays, while the lower section consists of a chest of drawers.

High-grade dense timber such as Cuban or West Indian flame mahogany was commonly used for exterior veneers, often paired with oak or pine for internal drawer linings. Marquetry, boxwood stringing, and satinwood crossbanding were frequently employed for decorative detailing.

Authentic 18th-century pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak-lined drawers with horizontal grain on the base panels, and original brass hardware or iron locks. The reverse side often exhibits hand-sawn carcass timbers showing natural oxidisation and shrinkage marks around joints.

A large mahogany linen press functions as a focal piece in a bedroom, dressing room, or living space, offering substantial concealed storage. It pairs effectively with neutral wall tones, linen upholstery, and contemporary brass fixtures to balance heritage wood tones with modern aesthetics.

Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood warping and veneer fading. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, following the grain of the wood, and avoid chemical aerosol sprays.
