The term 'Pembroke table' comes from the Countess of Pembroke, a

prominent English aristocrat of the late 18th century, who is

traditionally credited with either commissioning or popularising this style of table

The design emerged in England around the 1750s–1770s, during the

It was especially associated with elegant, lightweight, and versatile furniture that could be easily moved around a room — in contrast to the heavy, fixed dining tables of earlier centuries
