Georgian Double Series Opaque Twist Wine Glass, Flute-moulded Ogee Bowl

18th century
Description

This is a Georgian, English double series opaque twist stem wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ogee-shaped bowl measuring 5.8 cm (2.3 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bottom half of the bowl is moulded with slightly wrythened finger fluting. The bowl sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of eleven white enamel "cotton" strands would around a central twist of two enamel cords. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 7.5 cm (3 inches) in diameter. The glass is 15 cm (6 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a minute white inclusion (probably clinker) in the metal of the foot, dating from manufacture. There are two collectors' stickers attached to the foot.

Lead glass weighing in at 175 g. (~6 oz.).

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An opaque twist wine glass is an 18th-century English stemware style produced predominantly between 1755 and 1780. The stem contains internal spirals created from white enamel rods embedded inside clear lead glass.

Craftsmen inserted white enamel glass canes into a cylindrical mould, filled the interior with molten clear lead glass, drew out the rod, and twisted it during reheating to create intricate inner and outer spiral patterns.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-blown irregularities, natural wear patterns on the basal rim of the conical foot, a snapped pontil scar on the underside, and heavy lead glass weight.

Historic stemware is suited for placement inside illuminated display cabinets, arranged along a dining room sideboard top, or grouped with period silver and mahogany furnishings.

Hand wash individual pieces in tepid water using mild liquid detergent, avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock, and dry immediately with a lint-free soft cloth.
