Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An argyle, often spelled argyll, is a specialised tableware container designed to keep gravy or sauce warm while serving. Originating in the eighteenth century, it typically incorporates an inner jacket or central cylinder filled with hot water to prevent gravy from cooling and congealing.

Victorian argyles were predominantly manufactured using sterling silver, Old Sheffield plate, or electroplated nickel silver (EPNS). Handles were often fitted with heat-insulating ebony, bone, or non-conductive spacer rings to prevent thermal transfer during handling.

Authentic pieces usually feature manufacturer makers marks or EPNS stamps near the rim or foot rim, along with Victorian design details such as classical urn shapes, acanthus leaf molding, and integrated heat isolators on the handle.

An antique silver-plated argyle can be displayed as a decorative accent on a dining room sideboard, integrated into a formal table arrangement, or grouped alongside other silver hollowware pieces within a glazed cabinet.

Silver-plated items should be gently cleaned with a specialized silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth to remove oxidisation without stripping the thin silver layer. Avoid abrasive cleaners, store in tarnish-resistant cloth bags, and ensure internal chambers are completely dried after washing.
