Description

A refined small Kyoto-Satsuma koro (incense burner), finely made by the Kotobuki-do workshop, one of the distinguished Kyoto studios working in the Kinkozan tradition during the late Meiji to early Taisho period (c. 1890–1910). The unusual low, wide, three-footed form interprets the classic tripod koro design and was made for the burning of incense in a domestic or decorative setting. It is beautifully hand-painted in raised gilt and soft enamels with a charming riverside scene featuring two elegant bijin (ladies) in patterned kimono before pavilions and trees — a classic theme of Japanese art. A bold geometric border in gold and iron-red encircles the neck, giving strong visual unity to the composition. The warm ivory glaze shows a natural, even craquelure typical of high-quality Kyoto Satsuma ware. The underside bears the gilded Kotobuki-do mark, confirming its reputable Kyoto origin.

Good antique condition with strong decorative appeal. Small rim chip noted; original lid lacking. Light rubbing to the gilt and minor glaze wear on high points/spouts consistent with age. No structural restoration observed. Presents very well.
