Belouch Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

The mina khani design is one of my favourites and is common on Belouch pieces. The bright red is also typical on the better types and here it is beautifully set off against the deep blue background. The minimal use of white ensures the small diamonds that fit around the floral motifs stand out. There is a randomness to their positioning especially at the bottom of the rug where one row is missing and there is a scattering of red and brown flowers that take their place. You can often see how a rug design is formed as the weaver continues up the rug with the most variation seen at the bottom of the rug, the border often widens or narrows too as they work out the best proportions of the rug. I love this inconsistency in old rugs and I think it adds interest to them.

Condition:

Good condition with some wear to the brown pile and a couple of areas where some foundation is showing. Otherwise a strong rug with quite a tight weave.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Belouch rugs are traditional hand-knotted textiles originally created by nomadic Belouch tribes in the border regions of Iran and Afghanistan, known for their geometric patterns and deep colour palettes.

These rugs are typically crafted with a hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton warp, utilising natural dyes derived from local plants and minerals to achieve dark indigo, brown, and madder red tones.

Authentic pieces are identified by their soft, dark-toned wool pile, repeating geometric gul motifs, hand-knotted pile structure, and narrow decorative borders along the edges.

A Belouch rug works effectively as a focal point in rooms with dark wood, leather, or neutral furnishings, adding rich visual texture to both contemporary and classic decorative schemes.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar is recommended, alongside periodic rotation to ensure even wear, with professional spot-cleaning for spills using mild water-based solutions.
