Antique Baluch Rug

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

This unusual Baluch rug displays some striking features. For example, there is no central mihrab, or prayer niche, but two upraised hands (hands of fatima). The camel ground across this field is also desirable to find on such pieces, giving it a luminous quality that leaves the onlooker transfixed on the butterfly shaped motifs. The finishing border pattern gives us a glimpse of the tribal origins of this piece, in a rug that showcases an artistic blend of tradition and ingenuity.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baluch rugs were woven by nomadic tribes living near the borders of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. They are renowned for their dark, saturated colour palettes, intricate geometric patterns, and traditional prayer arch or tree-of-life motifs.

These rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced wool for both the pile and foundation, though goat hair is occasionally used for edge bindings. They feature asymmetrical knots creating a dense pile along with flat-woven kilim end skirts.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural plant-based dyes resulting in subtle colour variations, flexible soft wool, and characteristic dark tones such as deep indigo, terracotta, and brown. The presence of tribal iconography and asymmetrical hand-knotting further confirms age and origin.

A Baluch rug adds warmth and tactile depth when layered over pale hardwood floors or natural fibre carpets. Its geometric patterns ground minimalist contemporary furnishings and complement dark wood joinery.

Vacuum gently using suction only to avoid catching the hand-woven pile or fringes. Promptly blot liquid spills with an absorbent cloth and consult a specialist rug restorer for deep cleaning.
