A Victorian Burr Walnut and Mahogany Swivel Top, Drop Leaf Occasional Table

19th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A delightful little mid-Victorian (circa 1860) oval-shaped occasional table. With a walnut veneered top boasting a swivel mechanism, drop leaves and a drawer at each end of the frieze.

Raised on a turned pedestal and finished with shaped, carved cabriole legs.

The overall condition is very good with age-related wear and tear. We have noted one of the drawers has had a small section of veneer replaced on the bottom right of the face and an historic repair to the end of one of the leaves where it meets the table.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular during the 19th century, Victorian drop leaf occasional tables were versatile pieces designed for flexible space usage, featuring hinged flaps that could be raised or lowered and tops that often swivelled on a central pedestal base.

Victorian furniture makers frequently utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany and walnut, applying figured burr walnut veneers to table surfaces alongside hand-carved pedestal supports and tripod feet.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display natural wood figure variations, hand-cut joinery beneath the tabletop, original brass or iron drop-leaf hinges, and subtle age-related wear around the feet and pedestal stem.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa as an accent surface for books and lighting, using the deep tones of dark wood to contrast against neutral wall surfaces and modern soft furnishings.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and moisture to prevent veneer lifting or timber shrinkage.
