Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A grandmother clock is a slender variation of the traditional longcase or grandfather clock, typically standing under six feet in height. Originating around the turn of the 20th century, Edwardian examples often feature Classical Revival details such as swan-neck pediments, brass spandrels, and fine marquetry inlay.

These clocks were constructed primarily from mahogany or mahogany veneers, frequently embellished with boxwood or satinwood stringing and marquetry. The dials usually comprise brass plates, cast corner spandrels, and silvered chapter rings driven by mechanical weight- or spring-driven movements.

Authentic period clocks display well-proportioned cabinetwork with hand-cut joinery on internal elements and genuine timber inlays rather than surface prints. Look for period-appropriate mechanical movements with solid brass plates and natural oxidisation on the metal dial components.

The narrow proportion of a grandmother clock allows it to fit neatly into hallways, staircases, or alcoves without overwhelming the room. Setting dark mahogany timber against neutral backdrop shades provides a grounded focal point alongside modern artwork or contemporary furniture.

Dust the wooden case regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish occasionally along the grain. To preserve the movement, have a professional horologist clean and lubricate the mechanism every five to seven years, and avoid placing the case near direct heat sources.
