Sakazuki are shallow, saucer-like drinking vessels traditionally used in Japan for formal or ceremonial sake drinking. Often produced in graduated nesting sets, they are crafted from light wood and finished with painted urushi lacquer layers.

These items were fashioned using thin wooden substrates coated in multiple refined layers of sap from the Toxicodendron vernicifluum tree. Decorative elements, known as maki-e, were created by applying metallic powders like gold or silver onto wet lacquer before setting.

Authentic period lacquerware features lightweight wooden construction rather than modern plastic or resin cores. Look for subtle variations in hand-painted gold maki-e work, gentle wear around the foot rims, and a warm lustre developed through age.
