A charming pair of antique Victorian Staffordshire pottery spaniel figures. These classic red and white King Charles spaniels are beautifully hand-painted with expressive faces, gilt collars, padlocks, and chain detailing — hallmarks of the traditional Staffordshire mantle dogs that graced many English homes during the Victorian era.

Each dog features distinctive brushwork and fine detail to the coats, with lovely signs of age including typical craquelure and minor paint wear, consistent with genuine antique examples. The pair displays wonderfully together, evoking timeless charm and a warm nostalgic character.

Staffordshire spaniel figurines originated in nineteenth-century England, manufactured predominantly in Staffordshire potteries. Designed as decorative mantelpiece ornaments, these molded earthenware dogs were produced in pairs to face one another across a fireplace hearth.

These figurines were slip-cast or press-molded using white earthenware clay. After an initial firing, they were coated with a clear lead glaze and decorated with overglaze enamel paints and gilt accents.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples generally feature a small release hole on the base or back, visible mold seams, hand-painted details with slight variations, and natural age-related crazing in the glaze.
