Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French bronzes are defined by classical subject matter, high-quality casting techniques such as the lost-wax method, and hand-finished surface details. Sculptors of this era, including members of the Moreau family, created romanticised figurative works with naturalistic drapery and dynamic movement.

These sculptures were cast using an alloy primarily composed of copper and tin, known as bronze. Following the casting process, artists applied chemical patinas using heat and various acids to achieve deep brown, green, or dark black surface finishes.

Authentic pieces generally feature a cast inscription of the sculptors signature near the base. Examine the depth of the casting detail, the weight of the metal, and the quality of the cold-work chasing along seams and facial features.

A bronze sculpture acts as a focal art object when positioned on a dark wood sideboard, marble mantelpiece, or dedicated pedestal. Contrast the dark patina against light-coloured walls or structured architectural panelling to accentuate the silhouette.

Regularly dust the surface using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clean carved recesses. To protect the patina, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax once a year and buff lightly with a clean cloth, avoiding abrasive chemicals.
