Chamberlain Worcester Armorial Dessert Plate “Dragon in Compartments”, C.1800

Description

An English porcelain dessert plate by Chamberlain Worcester in the long-established “Dragon in Compartments” pattern, circa 1800. Originating from Kangxi-period models adopted at Worcester in the later 1760s, the design sets a dragon opposite a kylin within divided reserves of vases and precious objects, finely enamelled and gilt. The center bears an armorial device from a commissioned family service; the arms are those of the Bewicke (Bewick) family of Newcastle upon Tyne, Close House, Northumberland. Reverse with hand-written factory script: Chamberlain Worcester No. 75. Commissioned armorial wares were significantly more expensive than standard production, which makes the value of this plate special. A presentable late-Georgian plate of good color.

Originating in the late eighteenth century, the Dragon in Compartments pattern (also known as the Kyoto or Kakiemon pattern) was produced by English factories such as Worcester and Spode. It drew heavy inspiration from imported Japanese Imari and Chinese porcelain, featuring alternating panels of mythical beasts, flora, and traditional motifs.

During this period, Chamberlain Worcester manufactured soft-paste and hybrid hard-paste porcelain. The decorations were applied by hand using mineral-based enamel pigments and hand-gilded accents before undergoing multiple kiln firings.

Authentic pieces often feature painted factory marks or script signatures on the reverse, alongside characteristic wear to the gilding and foot rim. The quality of the hand-painted enameling, precise heraldic detail, and translucent body are key indicators of genuine early nineteenth-century production.

Armorial plates are frequently displayed on brass plate stands atop a sideboard or curated within a traditional glazed cabinet. They can also be wall-mounted using padded plate hangers to create a structured gallery feature in dining rooms or hallways.
