Fine and Rare Armorial Chamberlain Worcester Dessert Plate, C 1815

Description

A fine and rare armorial Chamberlain Worcester dessert plate.

The plate dates to c 1815, beautifully decorated in pattern 864 with finely painted roses in raised gilded reserves on a rich cobalt blue ground borders and Sir John Hullock family crest to the central part of the plate.

Sir John Hullock (1767-1829) was Judge and Baron of the Exchequer and resided at Thorngate House, Barnard Castle, Durham.

The coat of arms displayed on the plates shows an ostrich's head between two wings, holding a horse-shoe in the mouth, with Hullock impaling Martin, above the motto 'Tentanda Via Est', translated from Latin as “The way must be tried”

Marked to the reverse on the plates, printed mark in puce.

A rare object, an interesting conversation piece and a great find for a collector!

Dimensions: diameter – 21.5 cm

Condition: some gilt wear mainly to the internal band of gilt below the cobalt border, otherwise very good condition, without damage or repairs or glaze crazing.
