Artist and Signature: Edwin Ridsdale Tate, L.R.I.B.A (1862–1922) British antiquary, artist, and architect based in York. Tate is best remembered for his panoramas of York, architectural studies, and publications such as With Dickens in Yorkshire (1924). His works are held in the collections of the Yorkshire Museum and York Art Gallery.

Subject: Phoenix Tower, Chester — also known as King Charles’ Tower. This historic tower forms part of Chester’s medieval city walls and is famously associated with Charles I, who is said to have watched the defeat of his troops at the Battle of Rowton Heath from this vantage point in 1645.
