Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Salad servers made from precious metals gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century as formal multi-course dining customs expanded across Europe. Specialized serving implements were crafted to complement elaborate dinner services and showcase intricate metalworking skills.

Historical salad servers were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or silver plate to resist corrosion from salad dressings. Handles and accents occasionally incorporated natural materials such as bone, mother-of-pearl, horn, or ivory.

Authentic silver pieces typically bear hallmark stamps indicating metal purity, makers marks, and location or date codes on the handle or back of the bowl. Examining the detail of embossed motifs and construction joins also helps determine historical production techniques.

Antique silver servers can be integrated into modern tablescapes by pairing them with minimalist ceramic or glass serving bowls. They also serve as decorative accent pieces when laid alongside vintage linen on a dining sideboard or dressers.

Washing silver by hand using mild soapy water immediately after use prevents acid damage from food. Periodic gentle polishing with a specialised silver cream removes oxidisation, while storage in tarnish-resistant cloth bags helps maintain the lustre.
