Description

A pretty 18th century Derby porcelain press moulded cream jug of "dolphin ewer" form. Nice, crisp shell moulding, shaped rim and double scrolled handle with kicked up thumb rest.  Beautifully painted with sprays of garden flowers in lovely, bright enamels: orange red, turquoise, pink, purple, yellow, green and blue and finished with a red-brown rim. c.1760.

It measures 9.5cm (3 3/4") high to the handle, 11.5cm (4 1/2") spout to handle and 6.1cm (2 3/8") wide.

In excellent condition: there is a very small nibble to the foot rim but no other damage, repair or restoration. There is a very fine glaze line from firing around the foot, caused during manufacture. Very minor handling wear.

FAQs

During the mid-eighteenth century, English manufactories developed soft-paste porcelain to rival imported East Asian ceramics. Small functional items like cream boats and ewers were designed with Rococo fluid lines, shell moulding, and hand-painted botanical decoration for high-society tea and dining services.

Early Derby items were made from soft-paste porcelain, a mixture of clay and ground glass or frit. Pieces were slip-cast or press-moulded, glaze-fired, and then decorated by hand using enamel pigments fired at lower temperatures.

Authentic soft-paste pieces from this era often show translucent, warm-toned bodies under transmitted light, unglazed or dry foot rims, three or four unglazed patch marks on the base from kiln pads, and light surface wear consistent with age.

Delicate historic ceramics work well displayed on a sideboard, within a glazed china cabinet, or grouped with contemporary studio pottery to create a curatorial contrast in modern dining spaces.

Hand wash antique porcelain in lukewarm water using mild detergent and soft cloths. Avoid dishwashers, abrasive sponges, soaking, and sudden temperature shifts to prevent glaze crazing or enamel loss.
