Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century France, the bonheur du jour evolved into a popular form of ladies writing desk across Europe during the 19th century. English furniture makers during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods refined these desks by incorporating Sheraton revival influences, delicate marquetry, and compact raised drawer superstructures.

High-grade pieces were constructed using hardwood frames veneered in rosewood or mahogany, decorated with boxwood or satinwood floral marquetry. Writing surfaces were frequently fitted with hand-tooled leather skivers, while drawers utilised fine hand-cut dovetail joinery, brass bail handles, and pierced brass galleries.

Authentic pieces from makers such as Maple & Co. or Gillows usually feature stamped makers marks along the top edge of a drawer, inside a lock plate, or on the underside of the frame. In addition, genuine period items exhibit hand-sawn drawer linings, original brass castors, and natural oxidisation on the timber underside.

An intricate inlaid desk functions well as a focal statement piece set against neutral or deep wall tones in a study, hallway, or living area. Pairing the dark, patterned wood with modern minimalist lighting or contemporary artwork creates an engaging dialogue between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to nourish the wood veneer. The leather writing surface should be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth and treated with a dedicated leather conditioner to prevent cracking and maintain flexibility.
