Art Deco Rare Chrome & Bakelite Clock by Blangy Clockmakers, French, C1930

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Art Deco World
Description

Superb 1930’s Art Deco French bakelite clock by Blangy, totally authentic . Blangy is a French clock maker and in our opinion offers some of the most distinctive Art Deco clock dials available. This example is no exception, it really can't be mistaken for any other era. The overall condition is amazing, very crisp and clean and free from the normal fading and discolouration. A renowned French maker of the Art Deco period ; this model appeared in their catalogue up to 1939. The cubic chrome clock was known as the "Moderne" when sold on its own , but this version is mounted in a geometrically stepped black bakelite casing & very rare . A great sized clock which can easily be used for mantle, desk or bedside. Fully and professionally serviced this clock is in full working order including the alarm.

The biggest stand-out though is the condition, even on close examination, it looks practically brand new ! it must have been tucked away in a drawer for 85 years ~ the chrome, the bakelite, it is all perfect. Also, of course, running and working absolutely fine.

For a collector, this is definitely one not to miss.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco clocks from the 1930s feature geometric silhouettes, stepped architectural forms, clean graphic typography, and modern industrial materials such as chrome and early plastics.

Clocks from this period frequently incorporated phenolic resins like Bakelite, chrome-plated metal trim, heavy glass face covers, and enamelled dials with blued steel hands.

Authentic pieces show characteristic construction details such as heavy moulded frames, period-correct graphic typography, maker stamps on the dial or movement, and slight wear to the chrome plating.

Position the clock as a focal piece on a fireplace mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive desk alongside streamlined modern accessories or structured ceramic vases.

Wipe the casing gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid applying harsh chemical solvents to Bakelite surfaces, and have internal mechanical components inspected periodically by a horologist.
