Large 19th Century American Military Camphor Campaign Trunk

19th century
Description

A Rare Late 19th Century American Camphor Wood Military Campaign Trunk, Of Good Large Proportions, With McLaren Printed To Well Figured Hinged Top, Enclosing Storage Cavity, Having Original Brass Bound Decoration, Original Carrying Handles, Original Catches And Original Lock Stamped By "Eagle Lock Co, Terryville, USA".

Its widely accepted that trunks like this were normally purposed for army use, often given into the ownership of high ranking officers to use for their travels around the various battlegrounds and territories of the empire around the world, hence the carrying handles and the brass banded decoration, which also serves the functional purpose of protecting the item from bumps and bashes during the numerous times it would have been transported.

In modern day living this trunk would make a perfect coffee table boasting signifcant storage, or could also be used as a storage chest in many locations around the home including the hallway, living room or bedroom. The trunk is also a little larger than most which can be found on the market, which of course adds to its functionality.

The Eagle Lock Company (established 1833), was at one time the largest trunk and cabinet lock maker in the world. It was based in Terryville, Connecticut amd supplied locks and catches for many different designs and styles of antique trunks and boxes (as well as other items) throughout the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century.

We believe this particular military campaign trunk is almost certainly American in origin as its extremely rare to find Eagle Lock Company hardware on 19th century european trunks and also the brass banded decoration is significantly different to the standard brass designs which we regularly see on those european examples. The trunk is also a bit larger and more significant than the norm.

The trunk has also been inspected in our workshops by our expert antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale to ensure it is ready for immediate placement within the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Military campaign furniture consists of demountable or protective wood and metal pieces designed to be packed up and transported by armed forces during travel and overseas service in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Camphor wood was frequently chosen for naval and military trunks due to its natural pest-repellent oils, resistance to moisture, and distinct aromatic smell that protected garments and paperwork during long voyages.

Authentic campaign trunks feature flush-fitting brass hardware, heavy corner brackets, hand-cut dovetail joints, and solid timber construction designed to survive repeated transport without structural failure.

A large campaign trunk functions effectively as a central coffee table, an end-of-bed storage bench, or a focal accent piece in modern living rooms and hallways.

Dust the exterior timber regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain annually, and clean brass fittings with a dry cloth to retain natural patination.
