Gorgeous Antique Victorian Elkington Etched Glass & Silver-plated Claret Jug – Circa 1870

19th century
Description

A Gorgeous Antique Elkington Etched Glass & Silver-Plated Claret Jug showcasing a magnificent blend of neoclassical elegance and Victorian craftsmanship. The lid and collar depict figures in motion - dancers, horses, and musicians - reminiscent of Greco-Roman friezes, with subtle copper-toned highlights enhancing the depth and drama.

Topped with a thistle-style finial and adorned with vine and scroll motifs, the handle’s sculptural quality matches the grandeur of the overall design.

The inside of the lid and pour spout are finished in a warm gilt tone, often used to protect the contents and enhance the luxurious feel and the lower rim is embellished with a Greek key pattern, grounding the piece in neoclassical aesthetic tradition. The base is marked for the renowned maker ‘Elkington’ – circa 1870.

Measurements:

Height: 13 1/2" (approx. 34.5cm)

Diameter of base: 4" (approx. 10cm)

Total weight: 1131g

In good condition – Minor age-appropriate wear to the silver plate; glass is clear with no cracks or chips. Hinged lid opens smoothly; ideal for serving wine, displaying floral arrangements, or curating in a cabinet of fine antique glass. The rim of the base has a slight dent – as shown in the photographs for accuracy.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian claret jug is a specialized vessel created during the nineteenth century specifically for aerating and serving red wine, particularly claret from Bordeaux. These vessels feature a glass body with decorative metal mounts, including a handle, collar, spout, and hinged lid.

These jugs were primarily crafted from blown or cut glass paired with metal mounts made from sterling silver, electroplated nickel silver (EPNS), or silver plate. The glass was frequently decorated using etching, wheel-cutting, or engraving techniques.

Authentic pieces display makers marks or hallmarks stamped on the metal neck mount or rim, indicating the manufacturer or silver purity standard. Look for period-correct details such as hand-etched glass patterns, cast figurative mounts, and age-appropriate wear on the base.

An antique claret jug serves as an elegant accent when placed on a sideboard, drinks trolley, or dining table. Combining glass and silver elements allows it to complement both modern minimalist tableware and traditional dining room decor.

Clean the interior glass with warm water and mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives that could damage delicate etching. Gently buff the silver-plated mounts using a soft cloth and specialist silver polish to prevent tarnish and oxidisation.
