Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French ormolu photograph frames are decorative mounts crafted using gilded bronze, a technique popularised in 18th and 19th-century France. They typically feature intricate Neoclassical motifs, classical figures, and beaded borders, often combined with silk or velvet backings to display family portraits and miniatures.

These frames were predominantly constructed from cast bronze coated in a thin layer of gold mercury amalgam, known as ormolu. The interior surfaces frequently incorporated silk, satin, or velvet textiles alongside glass panes to protect and display portraiture.

Authentic ormolu features heavy cast bronze with meticulous hand-chased detailing, showing slight variations in casting and natural wear or oxidisation in unexposed areas. Maker marks, stampings from Parisian silversmiths or bronziers, and original silk linings also help verify authenticity.

An antique ormolu frame can be placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, bedside table, or console, where the metallic finish creates contrast against contemporary painted surfaces. Layering it alongside modern photography or art creates an eclectic display.

Dust gilt bronze gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding abrasive chemicals or metal polishes that strip the gilding. Textile components should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent silk degradation and color fading.
