Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French gilt bronze frames from the 19th century typically showcase classical motifs such as ribbon bow crestings, beaded borders, and laurel wreaths, reflecting Louis XVI and Empire revivals. Often termed ormolu, these pieces were crafted as tabletop accessories for displaying miniature portraits and photographs.

These frames were cast from bronze or brass and finished with mercury gilding or gold leaf application to achieve a durable metallic lustre. Secondary materials like onyx, marble, silk linings, and bevelled glass were frequently integrated to enhance texture and contrast.

Authentic examples exhibit fine hand-chased detailing on the metalwork, heavy casting, and age-appropriate patination or minor wear on the gilded finish. The backings often feature original easel stands, brass turn-tabs, or period fabrics rather than modern synthetic components.

Grouping modern black-and-white photographs or minimal line art within gilded frames creates a striking aesthetic contrast. Placing a curated trio on a marble mantelpiece, console table, or bookshelf adds historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Dust the intricate metalwork gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth without applying harsh brass cleaners or water, which can strip original gilding. Keep the frames away from high humidity to protect both the metal patina and enclosed media.
