Antique Edwardian Mahogany Inlaid Occasional Hall Lamp Table Painted Top C1890

1900 - 1920
Description

Edwardian Mahogany Painted Top Inlaid Table.

A very rare and unusual table perfect for a hallway.

This is a truly exquisite and very rare Edwardian occasional table, dating from approximately 1890.

The circular top is the most striking feature, boasting a rare and unusual hand-painted decoration. At its centre, a roundel depicts a delicate musical trophy featuring the ancient strung instruments, a lute and a lyre entwined with flowing ribbons and surrounded by pink roses. Radiating outwards from this central medallion is a beautifully painted garland of small pink roses and lush green leaves, interspersed with tiny yellow blossoms. This garland is further adorned with elegant teal-coloured ribbons tied into bows, creating a sense of graceful movement and symmetry. The artistry is subtle yet intricate, with the colors retaining a soft, period-appropriate hue. Around the very edge of the top, there is a fine boxwood and ebony inlaid stringing, providing a delicate frame to the painted decoration.

The construction of the table is equally fine. The frieze below the top is of a simple, clean design, accentuated with delicate boxwood inlaid stringing, a classic detail of the period. The table is supported by four square tapering legs, which also feature the same fine boxwood stringing, drawing the eye down to the base. The legs are connected by a beautifully shaped cross-stretcher, culminating in a turned wooden finial at the centre, adding a final touch of elegance.

This table is fitted with its original square cup brass castors, a clear sign of its authenticity and quality, which not only serve a functional purpose but also add to its antique charm.

This piece is more than just a table; it is a work of art. The combination of its excellent original condition, fine mahogany construction, and the exceptionally rare and ornate painted top makes it a truly special find.

The table has been through our workshop so we can assure that it is in fantastic, solid condition, with no joint movement or wobbles. We have cleaned and waxed the table, which retains its original, lightly faded French polished finish, showcasing a lovely patina that can only be achieved with time and care.

It would serve as a magnificent focal point in a hallway, drawing room, or study, providing both functionality and a rich historical aesthetic. Its unique character ensures it will be a conversation piece and a cherished heirloom for generations to come.

Condition and Provenance As an antique, this table does show signs of age and use. While in fantastic condition, expect minor marks consistent with historical pieces. The table is of a great quality and is structurally sound, with no major damage that would detract from its beauty or functionality.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian occasional furniture, produced around 1901 to 1910 and often extending back to the late 1890s, is characterised by lighter proportions, refined lines, and neo-classical influences such as Sheraton Revival motifs, floral hand-painting, and subtle inlay work.

Fine dense mahogany was predominantly used, featuring tapered square legs, cross-stretchers with central finials, mortise-and-tenon jointing, and decorative hand-painted polychrome details or satinwood marquetries.

Authentic pieces display natural timber patination, minor age-related wear to the painted highlights, period brass castors, traditional underside construction markings, and natural wood oxidisation.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa, within a hallway, or in a reading nook to display a contemporary lamp, ceramics, or literature, blending historical texture with modern decor.

Dust regularly using a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and preserve the unpainted polished mahogany with periodic applications of natural beeswax, ensuring painted areas are kept free from harsh chemical cleaners and direct sunlight.
