Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tantalus is a wooden cabinet or frame containing glass decanters that are locked in place, preventing access to the contents while keeping them visible. Popularised in the late Victorian era, they often included secret compartments or games drawers for social entertaining.

Victorian tantalus boxes were predominantly constructed from hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, complemented by brass or silver-plated straps and corner mounts. The interior housed heavy lead crystal or cut glass decanters, frequently accompanied by silver liquor labels.

Authentic Victorian examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, thick brass mounts fixed with slotted screws, and original working brass lock mechanisms. The glass decanters should show signs of hand-cutting or minor wear to the bases consistent with 19th-century manufacturing methods.

An antique tantalus works effectively when placed atop a dark wood sideboard, a home bar cart, or a gentlemans library bookcase. Pairing it with contemporary glass barware or structured marble trays creates a refined contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern decor.

Clean the oak frame using a soft microfibre cloth and nourish the wood periodically with a natural beeswax polish. Wash the glass decanters by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, ensuring they are thoroughly dry before re-inserting them into the felt-lined compartments.
