Fine Karaja Rug, North-west Persia, Circa 1890, 1.84m X 1.36m

19th century
Description

This is a very lovely example of this popular group of North-West Persian rugs. The terracotta background in the field is a beautiful colour, and is centred by three geometric medallions. The central medallion has a very lovely camel colour around the outside, and is flanked by two matching ivory medallions. The rest of the field is decorated with myriad stylised floral ornaments. Note too the dramatic main border which is wide and decorated with stylised trees and blossoms. The colours are all natural and the wool is exceptionally soft. Very good condition with its original ends and sides intact. Very tactile velvety pile, and fine supple weave. This is a very decorative rug which would add colour and vibrancy to any setting. Professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karaja rugs originate from the village of Karadja in North-West Persia, near the Heriz weaving region. They are distinguished by their geometric village style, typically featuring a central hexagonal medallion flanked by two distinct star-shaped medallions along a single vertical axis.

Traditionally woven with a hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, Karaja rugs utilize natural plant and mineral dyes. The knotting is executing using a symmetric Turkish (Ghiordes) knot, producing a thick, resilient surface texture.

Authentic period pieces exhibit three prominent geometric field medallions, subtle colour variations in the dye known as abrash, and hand-bound wool selvedges. The back of the weave displays clear, irregular knotting typical of rural handloom production.

A geometric Karaja rug works well as a focal point on natural timber floorboards, neutral stone tiles, or layered over plain sisal carpeting. The terracotta and deep navy tones complement both traditional mahogany furniture and modern minimalist interiors.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating roller bar to avoid damaging the fibers. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth, rotate the rug annually to ensure even light exposure, and rely on specialized rug restorers for deep cleaning.
