Trending Vintage Retro has dated this Edwardian Overmantel Mirror to the 1910s.
Constructed from solid oak with quality mahogany and other woods veneered to the cornice, it has developed a deep, mellow patina that speaks to its 115+ years of history. The broad frieze is decorated with a precise marquetry inlay in a geometric diamond pattern, made from contrasting lighter and darker veneers, which would have been painstakingly cut and laid by hand. The frame’s upper section is defined by a reeded cornice, into which original solid brass crossband motifs have been seamlessly integrated at each corner and midway along the uprights, adding subtle but deliberate contrast against the rich mahogany grain. Further gilt embellishments are found at the inner corners of the mirror’s opening, where small, finely cast leaf appliqués provide a refined decorative accent.

The original glass plate is still present, and I have to say that for its age, it is in a very well-preserved condition and is of the finest quality. The bevelled edges of the mirror catch the light beautifully, enhancing the sense of quality. The piece retains its original solid oak backboards, secured with period nails, and the reverse still bears the patina of age.

Condition is very good considering its age, with expected signs of wear: small scuffs and surface marks to the woodwork, some rubbing to the gilt decoration, and slight fading to the finish in areas of high contact. These signs of use are entirely consistent with an antique of this period and only enhance its character. Structurally, the frame is solid with no movement, the joints tight, and the mirror ready for secure hanging above a fireplace, on a parlour wall, or in an entrance hallway.

This mirror not only serves as a functional reflective surface but also as a historical statement piece, embodying the Edwardian era’s preference for understated elegance combined with fine detail. Its proportions and craftsmanship make it versatile enough for both traditional and eclectic interiors, where it will bring warmth, history, and a sense of timeless quality.
