Early 20thc Queen Anne Revival Walnut Pier Glass Mirror with Equestrian Oil Painting

1900 - 1920
Description

A charming Queen Anne Revival walnut pier glass mirror dating from circa 1920, surmounted by a decorative oil painting depicting a mounted gentleman with three hounds in a traditional English landscape.

The shaped crest is centred by a carved shell motif above a bevelled frame enclosing an oil on board depicting a mounted huntsman accompanied by three hounds in a country landscape. Beneath is a tall original mirror plate, all enclosed within a finely carved walnut frame with decorative chip-carved borders.

The warm walnut timber has developed a rich mellow patina, while the mirror retains excellent clarity, making it both a practical and decorative addition to a hallway, dressing room or country house interior.

Presented in good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with its age. The painted panel displays the craquelure and gentle wear expected of an original early 20th-century painting, adding to its character and authenticity.

Circa: 1920

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier glass is a tall, narrow wall mirror originally designed to occupy the pier wall between two windows. During the Queen Anne era and its 20th-century revivals, these frames featured architectural cresting, rich walnut veneers, and often incorporated painted oil panels or carved detailing.

These pieces typically feature cross-banded walnut or burr walnut veneers laid over a solid wood substrate, paired with silvered mirror glass and oil paintings rendered on canvas or timber panels.

Authentic period examples demonstrate traditional joinery techniques, natural timber oxidation on the reverse, hand-cut veneer work, and minor age-related distressing on the mirror plate and oil panel.

Place the mirror in a narrow hallway, between full-length drapery, or above a console table to accentuate vertical height, reflect natural light, and introduce classic equestrian charm to modern decor.

Maintain the timber frame by dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and applying beeswax occasionally, while avoiding direct liquid cleaner on the mirror surface to protect the painted canvas panel.
