Important and Rare Bronze Bust of artist Hans Temple - sculptured by Alajos Strobl, with original marble socle. Circa 1880. Museum quality.

Signed “Stróbl Budapest”, Foundry mark: “Turbain Károly & Sons Budapesten” [Károly & Fiai]; with Exhibition label: “München 1888”. Sold with self portrait of Hans Temple. Both items with Auction tickets - both dated 1924 (extremely rare pairing).

This important bronze bust evidences the friendship between Hans Temple and Alajos Strobl. The portrait of Alajos Strobl at work painted by Temple is in the Hungarian National Gallery. The sculpturer Strobl reciprocating with his sculptured bronze bust of Hans Temple.

*Hans Temple (7 July 1857 – 2 December 1931) was a Moravian-Austrian portrait and genre painter. He began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, where his primary instructors were Hans Canon and Heinrich von Angeli. Later, he further studies and worked in Paris with Mihály Munkácsy for two years. After establishing his own studio, he became known for painting portraits of other artists in their studios. His two most familiar works of this type show Munkácsy at work on "Christ before Pilate", and the sculptor, Viktor Tilgner, working on his monument of Mozart, for the Vienna Burggarten.

**Alajos Stróbl (1856–1926) was a Hungarian sculptor and artist known for his sensitive, realistic modeling. He was one of Hungary's most popular memorial sculptors at the turn of the 20th century, and his work can be seen in public squares throughout Hungary. Stróbl created many monumental works, including memorials, mausoleums, and fountains. He was also commissioned to create statues for the facade of the Hungarian State Opera House, and created bronze busts, and impressionist portraits of famous people and artists within his circle of friendships. "Our Mother", one of his major works, won him the Grand Prix Award at the World Exhibition in Paris.

Late 19th-century bronze portrait busts are defined by detailed anatomical features, naturalistic facial hair, and draped attire, reflecting the Academic Realism movement prominent across European sculpture academies.

Sculptors initially modelled the subject in clay or wax before casting the piece in bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting methods. The final bronze casting was hand-chased, patinated, and mounted onto a marble or stone pedestal.
