Rob Hall Antiques has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
Landseer's 19th century paintings were so popular that the distinctive black and white variety of Newfoundland officially bears his name.

These reverse paintings on glass, in what is their original frames, remain bright and vibrant with delightfully rippled 19th century glass. The frames are worn and somewhat crudely repaired in places. The painting, after 'He is saved' has had the back replaced as the glass appears to have a small section missing at the top right which has been historically repainted and matched in although a faint line remains. It can be noticed if closely examined or held up to the light. The other painting's backing is original. Losses to frames.
