A Superb Antique Baroque Carved Oak Panel, Allegory of Faith, Flemish or German, Circa 1680.

Description

A deeply and wonderfully carved solid oak panel, dating to the late 17th Century. This high-relief carving originates from Northern Europe, most likely a provincial workshop in Flanders or Northern Germany, which was heavily influenced by the grand Baroque style of the period.

The panel presents a powerful Christian narrative, the Allegory of Faith (Fides). A central female figure, representing Faith, stands in triumph, holding a cross in her right hand and the Holy Book in her left. She stands upon a vanquished grotesque or demonic mask, symbolising the victory of faith over evil and heresy. The entire scene is framed by a magnificent, scrolling Baroque cartouche, typical of the elaborate decoration found on important pieces of furniture.

Originally, this panel would have served as a door or decorative element on a large 'Kast' or cabinet, a statement piece of furniture in a wealthy burgher's home. The presence of an old keyhole on the reverse confirms its former function as a door.

Condition Report:

The panel is in good antique condition, commensurate with its considerable age. It possesses a deep, dark patina. There are historic signs of use, including minor chips and scuffs to the high points of the carving. The reverse shows evidence of historic alterations: the bottom rail is an old replacement, and there are various screw holes from previous mountings. A trace of white paint is visible on the side edges. The structure is solid and stable.
