Antique Victorian Bleached Mahogany Scrub Top Painted Drop Leaf Pembroke Table Restored

19th century
Description

A Charming Painted Pembroke Table.

A Re-invisioned Antique Pembroke which blends eras.

A truly captivating piece from the collection is a superb Victorian (C1880) Pembroke table, beautifully re-envisioned for the contemporary home. It retains the classic charm and versatile functionality of its 19th-century origins, but has undergone a masterful restoration that elevates it into a striking transitional piece. The tabletop is crafted from mahogany and has been expertly bleached to a soft, inviting hue. This process reveals the elegant grain of the rich mahogany in a subtly subdued manner, creating a luminous, airy surface that contrasts with its traditional, darker counterparts. This lightened top imparts a fresh, modern sensibility, inviting light into any space. This seemingly compact surface is extendable via two drop-down leaves each with 2 finger jointed supports which pull out to hold the leaf , effortlessly transforming the table to comfortably seat up to four people , making it a perfect fit as a versatile kitchen, breakfast, or informal dining table . Beneath this surface, you'll find the robust yet elegantly turned legs, which have been given a dramatic and sophisticated update with a painted black finish. This bold, uniform color choice provides a strong visual anchor, grounding the piece and offering a chic, contemporary edge. Adding to its historical integrity and practical utility, the table also boasts a single drawer with its original knob , a testament to its authenticity, and features the enduring mark of quality craftsmanship with its dovetailed construction . The table stands proudly on its original iron castors , showcasing its genuine antique lineage and allowing for ease of movement within your space. The interplay between the bleached mahogany top and the deep black base creates a harmonious balance, showcasing the table's exquisite form and the fine craftsmanship of the Victorian era, while seamlessly integrating it into today's diverse interior aesthetics. This is a statement piece - a bridge between eras - ready to bring character, adaptability, and a touch of genuine history to any living space. The table has been through our workshop so is all solid with no joint movement and the tops are flat with no twisting or open joints. Condition and Provenance As an antique, this table has been restored but does still show signs of age and use. While in fantastic condition, expect minor marks consistent with historical pieces.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the mid-eighteenth century and widely popular throughout the Victorian era, the Pembroke table was designed as a light, mobile occasional table with hinged drop leaves. It was primarily used for serving tea, bedside reading, or light dining before being folded away against a wall.

Traditional Pembroke tables are typically crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or oak. Key structural features include rule joints along the drop leaves, wooden fly-rail supports, turned or tapered legs, and often a shallow end drawer with hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, original brass castors or turned feet, period-accurate wooden leaf supports, and natural aging or wear around the rule-joint edges and timber surfaces.

A restored Pembroke table with a scrubbed or bleached top contrasts effectively against modern minimalist or classic country interiors. It works well positioned as a hallway console, an occasional side table in a living room, or a compact desk in a home office.

Maintain unsealed or bleached timber tops by wiping them with a damp cloth and applying a clear, matte beeswax to protect against moisture stains. Clean painted surfaces gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals that might strip or scratch the finish.
