Wigs on the Green has dated this Antique Portrait Miniatures Pair to the 19th Century.
Seated on a plush button-backed armchair, he is shown holding a gold snuff box. The most striking detail though is his curious walking cane with its gold collar and smirking face.
Meantime, seated on a red and gold upholstered chaise, his wife is wearing a splendid cornflower blue dress with a deep V neckline (worn with a lace chemisette for modesty), pleated bodice, pointed waistline and bell sleeves worn with engageantes (washable half-sleeves underneath). She is well bejewelled too with a gold buckle, a super long gold chain about her neck, a pearl ring and two colourful bracelets. Her dark hair is fashionably arranged in long ringlets. It is though the Chinoiserie lacquered sewing table with its pierced legs that most draws the eye and completes the portrait.
Both portraits are in fine condition; the side edges of the ivory are visible on both, caused by natural shrinkage over time. The portraits are housed with gilt-metal arched mounts within brass frames with beaded decoration. The frames also have brass plates reverse so they are heavier than might be expected.
