Three Portrait Miniatures of a Georgian Family (With Jane Austen Interest)

18th century
Description

This delightful family trio of portrait miniatures dates back to circa 1788. The miniatures are framed and glazed.

The inscription on the reverse names the little girl as Anne Howe Frith, her father as Lieutenant Colonel Bedingfield Bramley Frith, and his wife, Anne’s mother, as Jane Howe.

Anne Howe-Frith was born in 1783 on the Isle of Wight. She married Harris Big-Wither and had ten children.

She died in Winchester in 1866. There is a very interesting aspect to this set of miniatures because Harris Big Wither, Anne’s husband, had proposed to Jane Austen in 1802 and been turned down. Facing humiliation, Harris Big-Wither joined the North Hants Militia.

After he became Captain of his Company, he went to Lewes, Sussex. There, in 1804, he met and became engaged to Anne Howe Frith, just 13 months after being rejected by Jane Austen. They were married on 02 November 1804 in East Dean, Sussex.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian portrait miniatures are small-scale, highly detailed watercolour portraits painted during the 18th and early 19th centuries, designed to be carried, worn, or displayed in intimate settings.

These artworks were typically executed in watercolour or gouache on thin sheets of ivory, card, or vellum, housed within copper, gold, or wooden frames featuring gilded mounts.

Authentic pieces display fine brushwork, historical attire consistent with the era, soft lighting effects, and original period mounting techniques such as hand-cut mounts or burr wood frames.

They can be integrated into a gallery wall, displayed on a library bookshelf, or hung in narrow wall spaces to introduce historical texture to contemporary room schemes.

Display the framed pieces away from direct sunlight and moisture, clean the glass carefully with a dry microfibre cloth, and ensure the back seal remains intact to protect the watercolour pigements.
