Antique Silver Scent Bottle Hallmarked 1919 G H James & Co

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique silver scent bottle hallmarked 1919 G H James & Co

A lovely antique silver scent bottle. Circular, plain polished silver to the front and back with a screw top lid - the only details being a small rim around the edge and the hallmarks.

It is a slim, tactile piece fully hallmarked London 1919 G H James & Co. Inside the screw top cap is fitted with cork.

A simple and elegantly designed solid silver scent bottle in great antique collectors condition, there are some faint yellow marks around the edges of the rim suggesting that it may have been gilded at one point.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver scent bottles became widely used in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to carry perfumes, aromatic oils, or smelling salts. By the late Edwardian and early Art Deco periods, plain geometric forms crafted in sterling silver became popular for personal vanity use.

Antique scent bottles were commonly constructed from sterling silver, cut glass, porcelain, or gold. Metal examples often feature internal stoppers or screw-threaded caps designed to prevent the evaporation of liquid perfume.

Authentic British silver items from 1919 carry complete assay office hallmarks, including a lion passant for sterling silver, a town mark, a specific date letter, and a registered makers mark.

Small silver scent bottles can be displayed on a vanity tray, styled alongside glass dressing table accessories, or placed on a bedside table to add historical interest.

Silver scent bottles should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and cleaned using a specialist silver polishing cloth. Avoid immersing the piece in water if internal stoppers or seals remain intact.
